Japan enjoys abundant sunshine throughout much of the year. Rainfall occurs throughout all seasons, with a rainy season typically occurring from June through mid-July.

Late September and early October mark the beginning of autumn in Japan. Temperatures are generally comfortable for sightseeing, outdoor activities and corporate events. Humidity levels begin to decrease after summer, and the first signs of autumn foliage may begin to appear in some areas.

Light rain showers are possible, but extended periods of rainfall are uncommon. The weather is generally considered ideal for exploring both Tokyo and Kyoto.

The official currency in Japan is the Japanese Yen (JPY).

One Yen is represented by the symbol ¥. Coins are available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 Yen, while banknotes are available in denominations of 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 Yen.

Although credit cards are increasingly accepted throughout Japan, some smaller restaurants, local shops and rural establishments may still prefer cash. Visitors are encouraged to carry a small amount of Japanese Yen during their stay.

Visitors to Japan must comply with Japanese customs regulations regarding the importation of goods, food products, medications and restricted items.

Japan operates a tax-free shopping system for eligible international visitors. Foreign tourists staying in Japan for less than six months may be eligible to make tax-free purchases at participating stores displaying the Tax-Free Shopping logo.

Tokyo offers an extensive network of railways, subways and buses operated by multiple providers, including JR East, Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway. Kyoto is served by buses, railways and subway lines that provide convenient access to the city's major attractions.

The Shinkansen (bullet train) connects Tokyo and Kyoto in approximately two hours and is one of the fastest and most comfortable ways to travel between the two cities.

Taxis are safe, clean and readily available throughout Japan. Taxi doors open and close automatically, and tipping is not expected. Fares are generally higher than in many Western countries, particularly in Tokyo.

Walking is often one of the best ways to explore neighbourhoods, shopping districts and historic areas. Public transportation signage is generally available in both Japanese and English.

Tap water is safe to drink throughout Japan and is among the highest quality drinking water in the world. Bottled water is also readily available from convenience stores, supermarkets and vending machines.

Japan is consistently ranked among the safest countries in the world. Violent crime rates are extremely low, and visitors generally find the country to be exceptionally safe and orderly.
